Para un ingeniero agrónomo de formación y de profesión como yo resulta gracioso toparse con un sello llamado Engineer Records. Radicada en el Reino Unido, esta discográfica se especializa en Hardcore, punk y emo, aunque la amable gente de Aloud Music nos ha hecho llegar un paquete con algunas de sus últimas referencias que poco tienen que ver con los estilos musicales mencionados.

Así, en primer lugar, Countrysides es un EP compartido entre Jonah Matranga y Mikee J Reds, nombres propios tras los que se escudan dos cantautores que se defienden a pelo con sus voces y sus guitarras acústicas. La cara firmada por el señor Matranga apenas ofrece nada especial, pues las dos canciones incluidas (“Sweet Life” y “Secret World”) suenan insulsas y muy similares. La aportación de Mikee es más destacable. La parte vocal se nota más trabajada (gracias a los coros) y, de hecho, ambos temas encajarían perfectamente en los moldes del punk rock melódico simplemente añadiendo guitarras eléctricas y una batería. Empieza a subir el nivel del asunto…

Lo de Nathaniel Sutton ya son palabras mayores. Seguimos con el rollo cantautor pero esta vez con un tono melancólico y épico que pone los pelos de punta. A la voz desnuda del canadiense le acompaña la guitarra acústica y, de vez en cuando, una eléctrica y una batería; en unas canciones determinadas también suenan arreglos de cuerda, de piano e incluso electrónicos que enriquecen el conjunto de este disco homónimo. Temazos como “City of dreams”, “Zombies are everywhere” y “Like a bullet” (cuyo estribillo se incrusta en el cerebro) sobresalen dentro de un álbum muy inspirado. Además, por si sirve de referencia, mi mujer dice que la música de Nathaniel Sutton le relaja.

Por último (por ahora), la música de Kyoto Drive es la que más encajaría con las referencias dadas en el primer párrafo de este artículo. En efecto, estos jóvenes británicos podrían postularse como la gran esperanza blanca del emo y en los dos temas que se escuchan en este EP de presentación (“So much alive” y “Chapters”) apuntan buenas maneras. Mucha melodía vocal e instrumentación algo más contundente de lo que yo pensaba, puesto que mi mujer me acaba de decir en este caso que baje el volumen del reproductor. Sin duda, una banda a seguir y que esperamos que tenga cierta continuidad.
